Virginia Satir's five communication stances under stress: placater, blamer, computer, distracter, and the congruent leveler.

Virginia Satir observed that under stress people drop into one of five postures. The placater sacrifices their own needs to keep peace; the blamer attacks to stay in control; the computer retreats into pure logic; the distracter scatters to avoid the issue; and the leveler stays congruent, with words, tone, and body all carrying the same honest message. NLP adopted the model as a calibration tool: each non-leveling stance has lost connection with self, other, or context, and the coaching move is to restore what is missing.
