Modality

A sensory channel through which experience is represented: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory, gustatory.

Modality is the broad-strokes sensory category. Most people have a preferred modality (the lead system) that surfaces in their language and learning style. Working in a client's preferred modality builds rapport and accelerates intervention; deliberately working in a non-preferred modality can sometimes break a stuck pattern.
